IMPro Pitxantu film by Eli Wewentxu and Nicolás Jaar
Posted on Sat, 30 Dec 2023

IMPro Pitxantu is a video filmed and edited by musicians Eli Wewentxu and Nicolás Jaar, made during their Dar Jacir residency in October of 2023. Initially planned to meet in Bethlehem on October 18th; their plans were disrupted due to flight cancellations caused by the ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza. Consequently, they relocated the residency to Eli's farm in Chomio, near Temuco in Wallmapu. Over ten days, the artists improvised together and organized a community event on October 28th at Kom Espacio Creacion, in Temuco. This event featured Mapuche activists discussing their struggles in their territory, focusing on issues like the militarization of a school and controversies surrounding the 'Ley de usurpación'. Nicolás discussed the situation in Palestine, drawing parallels and identifying resonances between the anti-colonial and anti-racist resistance of the Mapuche and the Palestinian people. Free Wallmapu. Free Palestine.

Lithium Triangle Research Studio + Nicolas Jaar in Galeria Municipal do Porto
Posted on Fri, 07 Apr 2023

Open from 25.03–28.05.2023, Compulsive Desires — The Extraction of Lithium and Rebellious Mountains addresses the entanglement between extractivism and exhaustion, productivity and burn-out, across scales. Curated by Marina Otero Verzier, the exhibition takes as its starting point the ongoing lithium extraction plans in the North of Portugal and the struggles sustained by local communities for their lives and rights. Battles that emphasize how, in what has been described as "green colonialism", the development of the "renewable energy futures", too often involves the dispossession of communities and degradation of ecosystems. https://www.galeriamunicipaldoporto.pt/en/programas/das-exposicoes/desejos-compulsivos/

an essay by shock forest group for new eflux digital exhibition
Posted on Sun, 31 Jul 2022

A polyphonic essay by the research collective that I've been a part of since 2019 (Shock Forest Group) entitled "This Forest Was Built To Be Bombed", is featured on a new digital exhibition and research project curated by Xenia Benivolski for e-flux entitled "You Can’t Trust Music". Working from an assumption that internal and external soundscapes resonate in collective execution, You Can’t Trust Music (YCTM) is a research project connecting sound-based artists, musicians, writers, and thinkers who explore the way that landscape, acoustics and musical thought contribute to the formation of social and political structures. Shock Forest Group is a decentralized collective started in 2019 by Nicolás Jaar in Zandaam, NL. The text includes excerpts from “This Forest Was Built To Be Bombed: Shock Forest Diaries (2019-2022).” More info here: https://yctm.e-flux.com/sonic-boom

overtones fellowship and workshop in LA starting tomorrow
Posted on Mon, 11 Jul 2022

Overtones is a grant program and workshop to reduce barriers to electronic music production, nurture creative exploration and provide music industry education. Overtones are the layers of frequencies above a harmonic sound — things we hear but aren’t always aware we’re hearing.  This program will explore the concept of overtones in the creative process and in the music industry, led by Jaar and special guests. The in-person, 8-week program consists of 2 workshops per week. One on electronic music production with Ableton Live 11 led by Jaar, the other providing tools to navigate and demystify the music industry led by The Rising Artist Foundation, Jaar and guests. The program will culminate in a local showcase. All participants will be granted a stipend of $4,375 and receive funds to cover health care costs and obstacles to entry (child/elder care, transport, etc.) for the duration of the program. OVERTONES is presented in partnership with Jaar's independent record label Other People. More info here: https://ra.co/news/77185

Sound piece at Het Nieuwe Instituut
Posted on Fri, 18 Sep 2020

On 19 September 2020, Het Nieuwe Instituut opens Lithium, an exhibition in which the eternal human search for energy is highlighted through the work of researchers, designers and artists. Nicolás worked with Godofredo Pereira for his section of the exhibit, entitled 'The Ends of the World'.

The Ends of the World addresses the socio-environmental destruction resulting from the extraction of brine for the production of lithium. Focusing on the microbial and symbiotic ecologies of the Atacama Desert in Chile, our contribution to the exhibition looks at salt lakes or salares as environments that both live and give life. More than an analysis of lithium, we aim to re-frame the ways by which resource extraction is to be understood and debated. telas
Posted on Wed, 20 May 2020

Telas (Veils) is multiple things at once. It's a visual terrain created by artist Somnath Bhatt. It's a record by Nicolás Jaar, with key contributions from Milena Punzi (cello), Susanna Gonzo (voice), Anna Ippolito & Marzio Zorio (instrument makers), and Heba Kadry (mastering). It's a digital terrain created by Abeera Kamran where the sounds and illustrations of Telas live in their primordial states. The site was imagined by Abeera, Somnath and Nicolás as a panspermic terrain where no matter -whether existing in thought, physical form or other- has a solid or unmovable origin.

Multiple parts of the music were first played during two shows at The Kitchen in NYC in the fall of 2017, alongside performances by Africanus Okokon and Patrick Higgins. (https://thekitchen.org/event/other-people-presents-two-shows)

Telas is Nicolás Jaar's 6th full length album, and follows Cenizas from earlier this year.

Tracklist:

  1. Telahora
  2. Telencima
  3. Telahumo
  4. Telallás

Telas is out on July 17th on Other People. The physical edition of the album will be handled by Mana Records

RTE is a performance by Vincent de Belleval and Nicolás Jaar based around 10 rotating parabolic reflectors that capture and emit sound and light. The reflectors scan a building’s interior volume, creating an ever-changing ecosystem of reflections and feedback chains. Due to their parabolic shape, the reflectors emit focalized transitory sound fields, encouraging an active and ambulatory listening. retaining the energy but losing the image
Posted on Tue, 15 Oct 2019

This is a collaboration between Vincent de Belleval & Nicolás Jaar (with help from Pantxo Bertin) and it consists of 10 large rotating reflectors. The parabolas create an ever-changing environment of interlinked reflections and feedback chains. The title alludes to light and sound diffusion, signifying how the energy of the sound and light is kept in its reflections but not in its source. Due to their parabolic shape, the reflectors can also focalize sound, creating hallucinatory surround fields.

New Sound Residency curated by Nicolás Jaar
Posted on Fri, 21 Jun 2019

The first resident of the new Dar Jacir Studio is chilean sound artist and composer Sebastian Jatz Rawicz. From the press release: When Sebastián first entered the small square building made of stones in Dar Jacir´s garden, he perceived it as a sacred structure, a hiding place from which listening would be possible without being seen. A protected place for silence and contemplation. A place of geographical convergence, where the wind rises perfectly towards the four walls. In order to bring his experience back to Santiago, Sebastián decided to create a narrative of the Sound Studio building, tracing its coordinates through sounds and voice recordings. An archive of the work created in the studio is in the works via Other People

A new Sound Studio in Bethlehem

These sound workshops introduced children to the practice of music and sound´s creation, experimenting with instruments and tools available in the new studio. A residency program for international artists will be curated by Nicolás for 2019-2020.

New album Sirens out
Posted on Wed, 12 Oct 2016

Plastered in bold white letters on the cover to Nicolas Jaar’s Sirens are the words “YA DIJIMOS NO PERO EL SI ESTA EN TODO” - which translates as “We already said no, but the yes is in everything” – making clear, before even a sound is heard, the phrase’s thematic significance. Taken in its historical context it underscores the subtle, constantly political bent of the Chilean-American’s work; it refers to a phrase used by young Chilean artists and activists in the late 1980s, highlighting the contradiction inherent in the fact that to vote “No” was to answer “Yes” to the question of ousting military dictator Augusto Pinochet. Sirens, above all, is a musical and political exploration of this contradiction—of the division between “yes” and “no,” past and present, Chilean and American, curator and composer—and the creative possibilities that open up in the space between.

For Eleven Times – which refers to the number of times Garner said "I can't breathe" as police grabbed and choked him – the New York-based photographer and filmmaker worked with musician Nicolas Jaar and legendary producer Brian Jackson – long-time collaborator of the late Gil Scott-Heron – to create new music inspired by Jackson and Scott-Heron’s classic anthem “Winter in America.” With the help of Cory Rowe, who holds a PhD in criminal justice, Casolari found 11 protagonists whose testimonies bring the experience of police brutality to the fore. http://amp.nowness.com/story/nicolas-jaar-brian-jackson-eleven-times-samantha-casolari

His latest records, entitled Cenizas and Telas came out in 2020. He has also worked on soundtracks for Jacques Audiard, Pablo Larrain, and most recently Dea Kulumbegashvili. He has performed at festivals such as Le Guess Who (2019), Unsound (2019 + 2020), Rewire (2019), Primavera (2014), Mutek (2012, 2014), Sonar (2010, 2012, 2017), and shown comissioned pieces/performances at Het Nieuwe Instituut (2020), Sharja Architecture Triennale (2019), Romaeuropa (2019), het Hem (2019), Oude Kerk (2018), and Moma Ps1 (2012).

In 2019, Jaar assembled a group of 12 researchers (Shock Forest Group) in order to explore the history and future of a military complex-turned art institution in the Netherlands. The resulting exhibition, entitled "No Camouflage' (het Hem, 2019) uncovered the myriad layers of accumulated colonial, ecological and institutional violence that interlink on the site through archival media findings, data gathering, performances and sound installations.

Jaar is part of the team at Dar Yusuf Nasri Jacir for Art and Research, a grass-roots independent artist–run initiative founded in 2014 located in Bethlehem, Palestine. Jaar transformed Dar Jacir’s food shack into a sound studio where he has held sound workshops with kids from Aida and Dheisheh refugee camps. These sound workshops introduced the children to the practice of electronic music creation, experimenting with instruments and recording techniques available in the new studio. A residency program for international artists has been curated by Jaar since 2019, with Sebastián Jatz Rawicz (Chile) and Rolando Hernández (Mexico) as guests so far. Jaar has also held workshops at RCA Architecture Program (2021), Werkplaats Typografie, NL (2019, alongside research group SFG), 4x4 festival (Chiapas), Sonar Barcelona (2012) and Berklee College of Music, US (2015).

From 2017-2019, Jaar worked as producer / writer with FKA Twigs on her lauded album 'Magdalene'. He has recently collaborated with artist Somnath Bhatt (2018-2020), artist/designer/coder Abeera Kamran (2020-2021), composer Patrick Higgins (2019-Ongoing), artist Lydia Ourahmane (2018), installation artist Vincent De Belleval (2016-Ongoing), saxophone player Mette Henriette (2014-Ongoing) and fado singer Carminho (2011) among others.
